Save Your Smile with a Full Mouth Restoration

A full mouth restoration is available when you need to rebuild or replace all your teeth because of dental problems, oral health issues or cosmetic flaws. Our dentists may recommend a full mouth restoration when one or more other procedures will not be enough to achieve the goal of correcting your issues and saving your smile. Here is when we can rebuild your smile with full mouth restoration.

Signs You Need a Full Mouth Restoration

There are many dental problems that require a quick, simple treatment and then the patient is on their way. However, for many patients, their dental problems require comprehensive treatment that improves both the function of their mouths and the appearance. These are patients that might have:

  • Multiple missing teeth.
  • Numerous teeth with large fillings that are failing or showing signs of decay.
  • Cracked or broken teeth.
  • Badly worn teeth due to teeth grinding or other bad habits.

What is Full Mouth Restoration?

The American College of Prosthodontists explains that, as the name implies, a full mouth restoration refers to the reconstruction of the patient’s mouth. It combines esthetics with the science or restorative dentistry to improve the health, function, and beauty of the mouth.

A full mouth restoration is for patients that need to rebuild or replace all of their teeth due to dental problems, oral health issues, or other cosmetic flaws. A full mouth restoration combines many different treatment options to give you a happy and healthy smile. Some of the procedures that could be included in a full mouth restoration are:

  • Fillings: this is the most common type of dental restoration. They fill in cavities of your teeth with tooth-colored resin.
  • Crowns: These tooth-shaped caps are placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, appearance, to hold a bridge in place, or to cover a dental implant. When crowns are applied, the teeth typically need to be shaved down evenly around the tooth so that the crown will perfectly restore the size and shape of the tooth.
  • Implants: these are small, anchoring posts made of metal, typically titanium, and are plated into the bone socket where there are missing teeth. The implant will often need an attachment, known as an abutment, that will act like a crown preparation. Once this is complete, it will be covered by a crown.
  • Dentures: these are a removable replacement option for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. If you have lost teeth due to decay, gum disease, injury, or other issues, dentures are often a good treatment option. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while partial dentures are for patients who have natural teeth remaining.

Other treatments included in full mouth restoration can include: veneers, cosmetic bonding, teeth whitening, orthodontics, and gum treatment.

Benefits of a Full Mouth Restoration

When it comes to fully restoring the mouth, there are many benefits that improve both your health and appearance. To begin, reconstructing the mouth can improve your quality of life by allowing you to talk, eat, and chew normally again. Further, restoring the mouth can provide aesthetic benefits to your smile. When you don’t love your smile due to crooked or missing teeth, poor oral hygiene, or other dental health issues, it can cause you to lose confidence and even skip events.

Your smile is a universally friendly gesture, so being confident with your smile can make you more approachable to others and more easily connect and interact with friends and family — but even strangers as well. Additionally, smiling has also been shown to have psychological benefits, like helping to improve your mood and the mood of others around you.
