White Fillings
Fillings are one of the most common dental procedures, used to treat cavities and prevent future tooth decay. The amalgam filling, made of mercury, silver, tin and copper, was invented more than 200 years ago by an English chemist, and was used in England and France starting in 1826 (although there is evidence that fillings made of metal were used even before that in China and parts of Europe). For hundreds of years, dentists in the U.S. and around the world have used amalgam fillings to safely and effectively treat tooth decay.
White fillings are made of a composite resin (plastic) to more closely match the color of your natural teeth. They usually contain a mixture of quartz, silica and sometimes barium to improve strength and durability. They were first introduced in the 1960s in the U.S. and have become a popular choice for many people who experience decay or cavities and prefer the look of white fillings over metal, or prefer to avoid even minimal exposure to mercury possible with an amalgam filling.
White Dental Fillings for Restorative & Cosmetic Dental Needs
White fillings are just as effective as silver (amalgam) fillings for treating tooth decay, and are available at Young Family Dental for both restorative and cosmetic reasons. We offer two types of white fillings:
- In-office white composite fillings — best for treating minor tooth decay and small cavities
- Laboratory-fabricated porcelain inlays or onlays — recommended when you have more extensive damage or decay, or if you need a more durable filling
Both types of white fillings are designed to blend seamlessly with the natural appearance of your teeth and are effective at restoring the health and function of teeth after decay or damage. While they have many benefits, white fillings are usually more expensive than amalgam fillings, so we also offer amalgam fillings for those who prefer or need a more affordable option. Our family dentists can discuss all this information during your visit to help you compare the two options and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each.
