Porcelain Veneers

Over time, even the brightest smile can start to fade as your teeth get discolored or you suffer some small chips, cracks or fractures. Getting porcelain veneers is one of the easiest ways to restore your smile and cover some of those imperfections that might make you feel self-conscious.

The very first porcelain veneers were introduced in the 1920s by a dentist in Hollywood who was looking for a way to help brighten and enhance the smiles of his movie-star patients. Originally, the veneers were just removable caps that the stars would wear during movie scenes. By the 1950s and 1960s, dentists found a way to bond porcelain or composite material to teeth so the veneers could stay on permanently. Since that time, the procedure for adhering porcelain veneers has become easier and more affordable, and today it’s a great solution for anyone looking to improve their smile.

Fitting Porcelain Veneers

Traditional porcelain veneers are placed in three steps at two separate appointments:

  • Step 1: At your first appointment, the dentist will take X-rays and trim about a half millimeter from the front of your tooth enamel to prepare your teeth for the veneers.
  • Step 2: In the same appointment, they take an impression of your teeth to send to a lab that they use to make the veneers.
  • Step 3: About two weeks later, you come back to the dentist to have the veneers placed. The dentist will prepare the surface by making it a little rough so the veneers adhere well, then bond them to your teeth with a special permanent cement. Finally, they use an ultraviolet light or laser to harden the bond.

Custom Veneers

Since porcelain veneers are custom-made specifically to fit your teeth, they are extremely durable and long-lasting. You continue to care for your teeth normally, brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Most porcelain veneers will last 5 to 10 years before you will need to replace them.

Veneers offer several benefits for preserving your teeth and improving your smile. They are thicker than Lumineers, so they can cover up larger imperfections or significant discoloration better. They are also non-porous, so they won’t stain or discolor over time. They can also be used to correct misshapen or misaligned teeth, or fill small gaps in between existing teeth. However, it’s important to note that the dentist will remove parts of your teeth to make the veneers fit, which means you will not be able to remove the veneers.

Porcelain veneers are low-maintenance and easy to take care of, and can quickly transform your teeth into a beautiful, straight, bright-white smile. Contact the cosmetic dentists at Young Family Dental today in any of our five clinics (Orem, American Fork, Saratoga Springs, Riverton or West Jordan) for a consultation to discuss porcelain veneers and other options available to get you the smile you always wanted.

  • “These guys are awesome! I had a tooth break on a Friday afternoon and they got me in right away! I’ve since seen 3 different dentists there and have no complaints. The office staff is incredible and friendly. I still am not a huge fan of going to the dentist, but this office has really helped alleviate my fears and dental anxiety. I would recommend them to anyone.”

  • I’ve known Dr. Chris for over 10 years, and my experience with him has been awesome. I got Invisalign with him to straighten my teeth, and it was incredible to have straight teeth! It was great, too, that I was an adult and I didn’t have to walk around with braces like a teenage weirdo. Chris and YFD are excellent, I highly recommend them.

  • I took both my 8 year old and 3 year old daughters there, and it was great experience from beginning to end. It was the first time for my 3 year old (don’t judge me ?) Jacqueline was great at making it a fun experience for her. Jessica helped take care of my 8 year old who had some infection on a tooth she had worked on a while ago. And the dentist was great too. Overall, everyone was friendly, everything was clean, and at the end I had a credit on my account that I didn’t know was there which was an added bonus.
