The Best Candidates for Dentures
Who are the best candidates for dentures? There are many factors to consider and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Your dentist will help you determine if dentures can be a good fit for your mouth and lifestyle. Keep reading to learn more about who Young Family Dental believes are the best candidates to replace their missing teeth with dentures.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth. When it comes to dentures, there are two main types: full and partial. When it comes to what’s best for your mouth, you and your dentist will need to determine whether you’re needing to replace some or all of your teeth.
Colgate explains that, with full dentures, a flesh-colored acrylic base fits over your gums. The base of the upper denture covers the palate (the roof of your mouth), while that of the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue.
Benefits of DenturesÂ
There are many benefits of replacing your teeth with dentures. Some of the most notable include:
- Improved Appearance: Dentures can give you a more youthful appearance by filling in the gaps in your smile.
- Improved Confidence: Feeling self-conscious about your teeth can hold you back from participating in social activities or even smiling. Dentures can help restore your smile and improve your confidence.
- Improved Health: Missing teeth can have a negative effect on your oral health, so being toothless or having ill fitting dentures can result in a more frequent risk of gum disease, cavities, and loss of bone tissue. A healthy smile is important for both your physical and mental well-being!
- Maintained Oral Health: Without teeth, it is important to maintain your oral health by brushing and flossing daily. Dentures can be easier to clean and will not cause any damage that could affect the remaining natural teeth.
Candidates for DenturesÂ
There are many factors to consider when determining if dentures are right for you. We want to make sure that our Young Family Dental patients understand what these factors are, so they can be prepared to discuss the best option for their smile with us.
- Individuals who desire removable replacements
- People who have lost all of their natural teeth
- Those with extensive dental decay or gum disease
- People who have difficulty chewing food
- Smokers or heavy drinkers, as they are more likely to experience tooth loss
Who Shouldn’t Get Dentures?
There are certain conditions that Young Family Dental may recommend alternative treatments to dentures. This is because some cases of tooth decay and gum disease cannot be fixed with a filling or a crown. In these situations, a dental implant or root canal therapy may be recommended.
In some cases, those who have severe arthritis or other health conditions that limit their ability to remove and clean dentures may not be ideal candidates.
Lastly, if you are only needing to replace one missing tooth there are alternative methods that could be better for your individual situation.
Caring for Dentures
Dentures, like your natural teeth, require proper care in order to last a long time. To best care for your new smile, you should follow these care tips from Mayo Clinic:
- Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Run water over your dentures to remove food debris and other loose particles.
- Handle your dentures carefully. Be sure you don’t bend or damage the plastic or the clasps when cleaning.
- Clean your mouth after removing your dentures. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush on natural teeth and gauze or a soft toothbrush to clean your tongue, cheeks and roof of your mouth (palate). If used, remove any remaining denture adhesive from your gums.
- Brush your dentures at least daily. Remove and gently clean your dentures daily. Soak and brush them with a soft-bristled brush and nonabrasive denture cleanser to remove food, plaque and other deposits.
- Soak dentures overnight. Most types of dentures need to stay moist to keep their shape. Place the dentures in water or a mild denture-soaking solution overnight. Check with your dentist about properly storing your dentures overnight.
- Rinse dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth, especially if using a denture-soaking solution. These solutions can contain harmful chemicals that cause vomiting, pain or burns if swallowed.
- Schedule regular dental checkups. Your dentist will recommend how often to visit to have your dentures examined and professionally cleaned.
- See your dentist if you have a loose fit. See your dentist promptly if your dentures become loose. Loose dentures can cause irritation, sores and infection.
